NISO Virtual Conference, Sustaining Openness: Ensuring the Long Term Viability of Open Science, OER and More

Current thinking is that scientific research should be readily reproducible, discoverable, and openly accessible. There is also significant drive to develop open educational resources in the interests of easing economic burdens on student populations. The challenge then for libraries, content providers and platform providers is how best to implement strategies, technologies and practices in support of those concerns. But there are questions that must be addressed in discussing open science, open educational resources, open access monographs, etc. What supports are necessary in bringing this open approach into reality? What may be feasible in building an inclusive and collaborative knowledge infrastructure in this environment? What are key elements or best practices? What fiscal models or arrangements might be needed to ensure sustainability? Which sector (academic, government/public, commercial, etc.) is best positioned to muster the necessary resources?

Geoffrey Bilder

Director of Technology & Research, Crossref

Geoffrey Bilder has led the technical development and launch of a number of industry initiatives at Crossref, including Similarity Check (formerly CrossCheck), Crossmark, ORCID and the Open Funder Registry (formerly FundRef). He co-founded Brown University's Scholarly Technology Group in 1993, providing the Brown academic community with advanced technology consulting in support of their research, teaching and scholarly communication. He was subsequently head of IT R&D at Monitor Group, a global management consulting firm. From 2002 to 2005, Geoffrey was Chief Technology Officer of scholarly publishing firm Ingenta, and just prior to joining Crossref, he was a Publishing Technology Consultant at Scholarly Information Strategies.

Judy Luther

Judy Luther created Informed Strategies to support the development and distribution of market oriented products and services. We work with all stakeholders in scholarly publishing by defining audience requirements, developing new pricing models, identifying distribution channels, supporting negotiations and producing successful outcomes to meet organizational objectives. A sampling of our clients includes: societies (American Chemical Society, American Accounting Association, Academy of Management, International Association of Food Protection), new initiatives (Knowledge Unlatched), professional organizations (NISO), and grant funded efforts (Electronic Enlightenment, Conservation Space). Professionally active, Judy is a past president of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), serves on editorial boards of journals [Against the Grain, The Charleston Advisor and UKSG Insight] and has worked to develop industry initiatives such as NISO’s Best Practice SERU.

Judy Ruttenberg

Program Director of Strategic Initiatives, Association of Research Libraries

Judy Ruttenberg is primarily responsible for managing the SHARE initiative, which is building a free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle. While at ARL, Judy has also directed the Transforming Research Libraries initiative, which included responsibility for e-research and special collections working groups. Judy works closely with her colleagues in public policy and diversity and inclusion in advancing the agenda of accessibility and universal design within ARL. Prior to joining ARL in 2011, Judy was a program officer at the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) where she coordinated the work of TRLN’s collections groups, focusing on issues such as collections analysis, shared collections, and large-scale digitization. Judy holds an MLS from the University of Maryland College Park with a specialization in archives and manuscripts, an MA in history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a BA from the University of Michigan.

Mark Hahnel

CEO and Founder, Figshare

Mark is the CEO and founder of figshare, which he created whilst completing his PhD in stem cell biology at Imperial College London. Figshare currently provides research data infrastructure for institutions, publishers and funders globally. He is passionate about open science and the potential it has to revolutionise the research community. Mark also sits on the DataCite Board.

Mike Taylor

Head of Metrics Development, Digital Science

Mike Taylor is Head of Metrics Development at Digital Science. He’s new to the company, having spent many years working in Elsevier's Research & Development group and in the Metrics and Analytics Team. Mike works with many community groups, including FORCE11, RDA and NISO, and is well known in the scholarly metrics community. He’s also notorious amongst the Oxford theatrical scene as an actor, producer and director with ElevenOne Theatre. In his spare time he provides the entertainment for many a hen night with the Murder Mystery company, Smoke and Mirrors. Mike is studying for a PhD in alternative metrics at the University of Wolverhampton.
