NISO Webinar, The Power of Library Consortia: How Publishers and Libraries Can Successfully Negotiate

This session will examine the role and powers of the modern library consortium. Content and systems providers are aware of the need to successfully address consortia demands, but may not be as aware of the importance of collaboration with such groups. Consortia may be set up to satisfy different needs or achieve specific goals in areas such as licensing of content or technological support. Regional or statewide consortia can offer publishers significant insights into what may be expected in a forthcoming fiscal year or the flaws in a proposed business model. The session is intended to foster engagement as well as understanding between supplier and buyer.

Jill Grogg

Licensing Program Strategist, LYRASIS

Jill E. Grogg is a Strategist with the Content and Scholarly Communication Initiatives team at LYRASIS, a membership organization of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. Previous to her tenure at LYRASIS, Jill was the electronic resources coordinator at The University of Alabama (UA) Libraries and attained the rank of Professor while at UA. Jill has published and presented widely, including co-authoring "The Librarian's Guide to Negotiation" (Information Today, 2012).

Jill Morris

Executive Director, PALCI

Jill Morris is the Executive Director of the PALCI Consortium (Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.), made up of 69 academic and research libraries in PA, NY, NJ, and WV. For the past ten years, Jill has worked for large library consortia where her primary responsibilities have centered around collaborative collections and program design, as well as library content negotiations. Jill became PALCI's Executive Director in January 2019, after previously serving as the organization's Senior Program Officer and Associate Director. Prior to her time at PALCI, Jill held a number of positions with the NC LIVE consortium in North Carolina. Jill currently leads a number of cross-consortial projects, including the CC-PLUS initiative, funded by IMLS, to build an open source platform for the harvest, display and analysis of consortium eResource usage statistics. Jill received her MSLS from UNC Chapel Hill and holds a BA in History from SUNY Geneseo.
