NISO Two Part Webinar, Open Access Monographs - What You Need To Know, Part Two - 8.19.20

Helping people gain a greater understanding of the information community — our issues and concerns, challenges and opportunities — is core to NISO's mission. Our events are a key element of this, with our popular webinar program at their heart. Barbara Kline Pope is director of Johns Hopkins University Press (JHUP), one of the nation’s largest university presses, annually publishing 150 new books and 97 journals across the life, health, and social sciences, public health, and humanities. At JHUP, she is also responsible for Project MUSE, an innovative aggregation of more than 60,000 books and 670 journals from more than 250 scholarly publishers and for Hopkins Fulfillment Services, serving university presses with print and electronic book distribution, title database services, and sales representation. Prior to her role at JHUP, Barbara was Executive Director for Communications at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and Executive Director of the National Academies Press (NAP). There she transformed NAP’s traditional print business model to one that is completely open-access, developed pioneering programs for engaging public audiences with science and engineering, and facilitated more robust research in the field of science communication. She serves on the Advisory Board of TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem), is a past president of the Association of American University Presses, and holds an M.S. from the University of Maryland.

Charles Watkinson is Associate University Librarian for Publishing at University of Michigan Library and Director of University of Michigan Press. Prior to moving to Michigan in 2014, Charles was Director of Purdue University Press and Head of Scholarly Publishing Services in Purdue Libraries for five years, and Director of Publications at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens for five years. He has been a board member of the Association of American University Presses and the Society for Scholarly Publishing, and was an initiator of the Library Publishing Coalition. Dr Frances Pinter is the Executive Chair of the Central European University, having previously been CEO of Manchester University Press and Founding Publisher of Bloomsbury Academic. She also set up Knowledge Unlatched. Earlier on she was Publishing Director at the Open Society Institute. She founded Pinter Publishers, that owned Leicester University Press and Belhaven Press. Her contribution to Open Access was acknowledged when receiving the University Press Redux 2018 award.
