14th BISG-NISO Forum on the Changing Standards Landscape - June 23, 2021

Librarians are well-aware that high quality metadata is the key to a user successfully identifying a useful resource. Provider awareness of this has shifted with workflows being enhanced to deliver more complete, accurate, and reliable data. That said, twenty-first century systems do more and require more than simple matching of traditional bibliographic elements to correct fields. Users may be looking for more precise identification of non-traditional content while library consortia may need new indicators useful to collective collections. The 14th Annual BISG-NISO Forum will explore the needs of stakeholders and systems in the interests of interoperability and user satisfaction. This four-hour virtual event will bring together stakeholders concerned with the improvements needed to more efficiently and effectively create and transfer metadata between information systems. What data is useful? Which fields are the most frequently used? Should new data and new fields be introduced in order to better serve the needs of the community? What are the issues associated with reliability and credibility? Finally, this Changing Standards Landscape forum will close with a discussion of what such enhancements might enable in a more efficient, more automated, and ultimately more useful information ecosystem. This is the 14th NISO – BISG Changing Standards Landscape forum. The event is co-hosted by Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, NISO and Brian O’Leary, Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group.

Data Trust Program Officer, OA eBook Usage Data Trust

Christina currently serves as the Data Trust Program Officer for the OA eBook Usage Data Trust project having previously served as Educopia’s Director of Strategic Initiatives (2015-2017). Affiliated with Educopia since 2012, Christina has worked to develop capacity-building resources for Educopia’s affiliated communities while managing efforts relating to digital preservation [Identifying Continuing Opportunities for National Collaboration (ICONC), Chrysalis – Opportunities for New Types of Research Alliances], cultural heritage workforce and leadership development [NEXUS: Leading Across Boundaries, Mapping the Landscapes, Coalition to Advance Learning National Agenda Development], and data analytics [Developing a Pilot Data Trust for Open Access eBook Usage].

Jill Morris

Executive Director, PALCI

Jill Morris is the Executive Director of the PALCI Consortium (Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.), made up of 69 academic and research libraries in PA, NY, NJ, and WV. For the past ten years, Jill has worked for large library consortia where her primary responsibilities have centered around collaborative collections and program design, as well as library content negotiations. Jill became PALCI's Executive Director in January 2019, after previously serving as the organization's Senior Program Officer and Associate Director. Prior to her time at PALCI, Jill held a number of positions with the NC LIVE consortium in North Carolina. Jill currently leads a number of cross-consortial projects, including the CC-PLUS initiative, funded by IMLS, to build an open source platform for the harvest, display and analysis of consortium eResource usage statistics. Jill received her MSLS from UNC Chapel Hill and holds a BA in History from SUNY Geneseo.

Lesley Whyte

Managing Director, Bibliographic Data Services (BDS)

Lesley White (@bibdsl) is Managing Director for Bibliographic Data Services (BDS), which services the British library community and provides CIP cataloguing for The British Library. With her colleagues, Whyte believes that quality data plays an important role in libraries, to aid resource discovery and to record knowledge for posterity. Her efforts are dedicated to making BDS a great place to work, and an organisation which nurtures talent and delivers results.

Maurice York

Director of Library Initiatives, Big Ten Academic Alliance

Maurice joined the Big Ten Academic Alliance as the Director of Library Initiatives in 2020. Prior to that point, he had been with the University of Michigan where he served as Associate University Librarian for Library Information Technology. Before his time at the University of Michigan, Maurice held a series of progressively responsible positions at Bard College, Emory University and North Carolina State University. He also has been an active and visionary leader in numerous national initiatives designed to ensure the open access of knowledge in the public interest through collective action. Maurice holds a Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies from Bard College and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
